xx She was sashaying. Simple enough. But at the moment the sashay was more of an escape. Her body moved lithely between the venders' stalls, narrowly missing products and produce, as she twisted and ducked with each turn. You might wonder what she was escaping from, until you glimpsed the pudgy lady trailing after her, a worn blue from flying ruthlessly with her. Her maid. And, for all intents and purposes, her chaperone for today's excersion. She'd told her brother that she was simply going to the Market to see what the venders had on display. But, as temptation often did, something called her attention. What, pray tell? The dark, winding streets that lead into a less than safe part of town. Her slippers slapped lightly over the ground, the cobblestone walkways wearing gently at the blue fabric of the him of her dress in retaliation. Her bonnet bobbed with her head, whisps of red hair flying out to curl around her face. Her breath came in gasps. Lord only knew that is she was this tired, the pudgy maid named Trudy, would be heaving herself neigh to death at the moment.
xx Lady Jane Kingsley. That was her name. She, you might have guessed, was all the scandel of polite society. Why? Because she wasn't content with tea time chats, read scandelous dime novels, and rode astrid her steed, instead of side-saddle as a dainty woman of breeding. Her hair, as you'd seen of bright flame, was considered a curse and the reason she was so adventurous. But, honestly, it wasn't. She simply wanted to live. Love. Laugh. Passionately. And polite society didn't seem to know or care about passion. Stumbling, she caught herself on the stone edge of a shop and leaned against it, gasping for another breath. A wide smirk tempted her lips as she found her pursuer had fallen far enough behind to be unviewable. Oh, her brother would kill her. The maids would chastise her. But, in the end, as long as she had her adventure, it was worth it.
xx Drifting down a narrow alley, she cautiously swung her green eyes from side to side, allowing them to widen ever so slightly as she gazed on particularly unappealing people who seemed to watch her avidly. Shifting her shawl, she didn't care to note the state of her attire. Her bonnet had slung back to hang at her neck, the slender bow wrapping around her pale throat. Her hair, a mess of fiery curls, draped hap-hazardly around her face. Yes, she would indeed have her adventure, but, perhaps this wasn't a good one. She came to a halt at a dead end, sighing angrily, a touch of annoyance added to the sound, as she turned to head back. At the mouth of the alley a shaddow draped lazily on the corner. A person. A villain perhaps! Bunching her brows, their slender arches tight with worry, she moved to walk along the other side of the stine building, wondering just what the fiend would do when she attempted to pass him. Oh, but this was just like a dime novel! The villain waits to attack, the lady skurts around him. She learned her lesson and is forbidden leave of the house until marriage. There was no way that Jane would be forced into captivity thanks to some vaillain! Straightening her spine, she tipped her chin upward, regally as she crossed the alley way, her posture not portraying the trepidation she felt. An adventure indeed!
ooc; er. had muse.

Why was he in the Market? He struggled to remember. Oh yes! To escape responsibility from his younger brother and sister. He loved them dearly and would do anything for them but he really needed his space. Time to think and breath without someone hovering over his shoulder. His walk was steady, his little family wouldn't think to find him here. Normally he would lock himself in his room, preferring his books to that of other Lords or Ladies. He, Lord Shaden Grace, was almost fed up with titles and such. He couldn't be himself when others were always ready to pass their judgment onto him. He sighed heavily and veered away from the crowds of people. His feet carried him to the more deserted streets, but these of course were also the most dangerous.
Shaden had been angry with his father when he'd passed away, leaving his mother sick and tired only too often, leaving him alone to serve and help his family. "Its your duty!" His mother would yell at him in a weak and dying voice. It was pathetic. Shaden had prayed for her death. And it came, finally, a year later. He sighed. Now he was alone helping his brother and sister, and his sister was a wild little thing, always doing things she wasn't supposed to. And his brother, now there was trouble, always competing with Shaden, always trying to out due him. It made him want to scream.
He ran a hand through his blond hair, and his blueish-gray eyes looked around warily. Maybe he should go back. Who knows what kind of trouble the other two were getting themselves into right now. A light breeze blew through the street, and he gladly took a deep breath. He slowly came to a stop, his black shirt wasn't buttoned at the top, and he could feel the cool breeze kiss at his chest. No, forget it, this was his time to relax, those two could take care of each other for a short while.
He started walking again, moving calmly, not at all disturbed by the quietness around him. Shaden turned, coming to an alley, and at the end of it was a women. He stopped. He watched her for a moment, noticing the different emotions run across her face before she tipped her chin up and continued on through the alley. He smiled, clearly, she was a Lady. Someone he had not met but that was hardly a surprise. He still hadn't moved, she was interesting to watch, as she came closer toward him. Shaden waited either for her to pass him by or for her to say something to him. A slight upturn of his lips as he fought another smile.

xx Pausing, Jane offered a glance at the shadow. When had that shadow taken form? Shaking her head in consternation, she sighed and galnced over the newly determined man. His black shirt had allowed him to blend in with the shadows until she'd gotten closer. Quickly shaking her head, she realized she was staring. Intently staring. As if waiting for him to do something. Shifting warily, she glanced back toward the gaping mouth of the alley and took a step forward. Lady Jane, you must think with your mind! You can't live your life like a book! Not everything is an exciting adventure! For a moment she wanted to pitch a fit at her tutor's words. He'd caught her riding astride, and had valiantly, or rather traitorously told her brother. That had been the last day he'd been her tutor. Her brother, though honest and honorable, had doted on her since her parent's death. That didn't mean he thought what she did was ok. He probably simply couldn't stand to disappoint her.
xx Taking another step forward, she twisted, turned toward the man and placed her fisted hands on her hips as her maid Matilda often did, and eyed him. "Why, you're no villain! Y-you're positively boring!" Her green eyes flashed, as if he'd committed some horrible crime. Shouldn't she be glad he was no villain? Probably. But should wasn't exactly a part of Jane's vocabulary. Sighing, she glanced to the mouth of the alley again and gasped. Trudy was just turning toward the alley, two men, probably her brother's men, skirting her closely. Looking back toward the dead end, she contemplated climbing the the stone to the rooftops. They would drag her home, tell her brother she'd been found in a dark, nearly deserted alley, and he'd lock her up and throw away the key. Taking a deep breath, she glanced back to the man who she guessed was finding her situation funny. She really hadn't cared to note his emotions or expressions.
xx "Ok, well. It's time to get interesting sir! You plant those broad shoulders in front of me, tell them to leave, and in return I won't do anything to embarrass you!" Her eyes were wide, as if she didn't realize how radiculous she sounded. How could she? This was an adventure, and she was ruining it, and that man was supposed to be a villain and he hadn't tried to come after her or scare her. He'd only stared at her when she reached his end of the alley. "Posh! I'm dead...This is going to be worst than-than Lady Uldricks cat...But really...The thing was horrid! And she treated it like a prized steed...Really he deserved the good soaking though..." She muttered incoherently, one part of her mind remembering how much trouble she'd gotten in for pouring her tea on another noble's cat at a formal luncheon, the other part seeking a way to avoid the oncoming confrontation. She was irrational. But that was Jane. Stomping her foot, she turned her eyes back up to his, pleading like some poor puppy, knowing he must think she was a madwoman. She ran a hand through her curls, still not noting the fallen bonnet at her shoulders.

Shaden smirked as her hands or rather her fists were placed on her hips, and she accused him of not being a villain, he couldn't help but laugh. "Boring am I? I'm sorry to disappoint you." His voice was soft, friendly, but there was also a slight teasing tone; something very few people caught on to. His sister always did through, it drove her crazy. He glanced up from her accusing green eyes, and there, at the other end of the alley was a women and two men, they were clearly searching and they seemed to have found what it is they were looking for. Oh, how amusing. This poor women in front of him at run out on her chaperon, trying to find time by herself he guessed, much like what he was doing but he of course had no chaperon. He, at least, could do as he pleased. He was still watching the chaperon and two men and was surprised by the next words from the young ladies mouth. Did she honestly just threaten him?! Him? How cute. Even if she went through with it what on earth could she say about him? That he wasn't a villain? Oh yes, very embarrassing indeed. He eyes narrowed, this women was so obviously trying to grab at some idea that might save her from whatever fate would be waiting for her on the return home. He smiled. "I suppose I could give it a try." He was, of course, humoring her. As if it was some kind of joke. Now she was incoherent, going on about some cat. Wait...who's cat did she say? Lady Uldricks? The name sounded so familiar to him but he couldn't call it back from memory. Perhaps later when he had more time to think about it. His eyes fell onto her bonnet, which had fallen on to her shoulder. He lightly touched it, and commented, "His this a new fashion I've yet to hear about?" Shaden glanced back up at the other women and men. "Hmmm....I distaste uninvited company." He said, almost to himself. Then to her, "Do you think if I introduced myself as a Lord they would let you stay out?" He questioned. He still found amusement in all this, and he almost wished for more excitement. Maybe he should start getting out more often.

xx Narrowing her eyes, she caught his smirk, as she listened to him speak. "Oh! Oh don't you even dare think that this is amusing!" Her green eyes flashed as they had before, as she folded her arms over her chest and glared at him. This was so not turning out the way she'd wanted it to. Obviously this adventure would end up with a stern lecture from her brother and perhaps the inability to attend the upcoming Masquerade Ball. Sighing, she chewed her bottom lip worriedly. Perhaps she could convince her brother that Trudy had been smothering her? Doubtful. Trudy was a mother hen, but not nearly as smothering as some chaperones were. But she had been going on all morning about Jane's unlady-like behavior. Posh! Nobility was boring if she couldn't have any fun at all. Teas with elderly women deemed important, and prudish money-hungry and popularity hungry young ladies was the most horrible thing to subject someone to! And Jane had been forced to go to tea once today. So she wanted some time alone. A little adventure. She really wasn't aiming for a scandel...Just some fun.
xx Focussing her eyes back on him, she dashed a quick glance back to Trudy, before once again, returning it to the man. "Please do! My name is Lady Jane Kingsley. If she asks, I-I got lost...You were showing me the way back..." Narrowing her eyes, she added. "And if you so much as say one thing that puts me in a bad light, I-I'll humiliate you!" Nodding, as if satisfied by her own challenge, she raised her chin another half inch and attempted to stare down her nose at him, as she'd seen those snobbish ladies doing earlier. Really, staring down one's nose at someone taller than them wasa impossible! How did the others pull it off? And he was standing there looking so amused and smug!
xx Watching him as he touched the bonnet, she blinked, eyes widening. She'd run her hand through her hair three times atleast and hadn't noticed the bonnet had fallen! Her cursed red hair must look a sight! Glaring at him, she huffed and quickly snatched the bonnet up, placing it on her head, and tightening the knot. "No. It's my own style. See that you don't go telling everyone they can copy me!" She muttered sarcastically, as she hurriedly tucked flaming strands of hair into various places beneath the bonnet. Sticking her toungue out, in a rather childish manner, she took a small step back, to put distance between them so Trudy wouldn't say anything about her being alone with a man and standing to close. It wasn't as if she was in danger of ruining her already soiled reputation. Besides! Men weren't interested in the cursed hair. No one would want to give their family bad luck by even entertaining the idea of a red-head. Blinking, she grinned lightly. "Oh, I'm not sure if it would help or not. Maybe. But I don't think that they will trust that one person can controll-er, I mean...Protect me." Blushing at her slip, she hurriedly turned her glance to a fuming Trudy.
"What in heaven's name do you think yer doin'! Jus' as I was gettin' that reputation all smooth and clean for the Masquerade Ball, you go runnin' off on another one of your rampages like a heathen! Bes' ye be glad yer noble, Miss Jane, or I'd jes' as soon take a stick to your hind!" Trudy ground out, her chest heaving, obviously unaware of the amused expressions on the two fellow's faces behind her. Blushing, Jane offered her company an embarrassed flash of green eyes. Not many servants had the galls to chastise a noble, but Trudy was certainly one.
ooc; Jane's such a mess. ^-^

Shadens hand ran once more through his hair as he absentmindedly wondered if his sister would soon be this much troublesome to her own chaperon. God help whomever was going to watch over her as she walked through the Markets. This young lady most likely just wanted to have fun, and adventure or something like that. Which, oddly enough, mirrored his own desires. Shaden knew that as a child and growing up he'd been a hard one to handle, always running off, sneaking out in the middle of the night. But now he had his brother and sister to look after and his days of fun and adventure seemed to have come to a sharp, painful close. Oh how he longed to just leave, pick up his belongings and move away, travel and learn. Above all, he wanted to be free. He slowly shook his head to himself, willing the thoughts to disappear from his mind, but they never truly left him, they lingered, just outside his normal thoughts, ready to pounce on him when ever he started to daydream.
Lady Jane Kingsley. He knew that name for sure, though he'd never met the family, it was just by reputation that Shaden had heard of her at all. Almost all the nobles he'd ever spoken to had talked badly of her and her constant scandals. Shaden thought it was ridiculous and close-minded. What would any of them no of real fun or adventure? The thrill of doing something you know you shouldn't? They were boring and would, without a shred of doubt, stay that way until they died. It was sad, and Shaden almost felt bad for them. Almost. Now she was challenging him. Normally, he would accept such a challenge but now was most certainly not the time or place for such things. As she stared at him, he simply stared back. Her intimidation had very little to no affect for him. Though it might have worked if he wasn't taller then her. He smiled inwardly at the thought.
Her own style. Well that was fine. "I wouldn't tell a soul." He said through a smile. It surprised him to realize just how much he'd been smiling in just the past few minutes. Maybe he needed out more then he'd thought. But he cringed inside, being surrounded by a group of nobles was not high on his list of things to do right now. He was, however, planning on attending the Ball. That should be loads of fun. The only reason he was going was because he liked to dance. That's was it. Shaden did not smile at her slight slip of the tongue. Control her? Was she really that bad? He had trouble believing that. His arms crossed over his chest.
Shaden rather enjoyed how the women all but ignored him, acting if he wasn't standing there and listening very intently to everything she was saying. Shaden was taken back by how she talked to Jane. It was nothing short of disrespectful, and especially in front of a stranger. A stranger who just so happened to be a Lord and had little patience with over protective women. And the amused expressions on the two men's faces behind her. He stepped forward, beside Jane, though he did not touch her. His arms remained crossed. "Stop acting as if the Lady is a child! Your smothering her." His voice, normally smooth and friendly was slightly raised and held irritation. "My name is Lord Shaden Grace and I am more then capable in leading her back home." His tone dared any of them to call him liar or argue against him. Shaden had always had a slight temper, often it got him into much trouble. One day it could very well even get him killed. His jaw was set and his eyes blazed like liquid fire and stared into the women's.

xx Groaning inwardly, Jane's shoulders sagged. Trudy could make her life a living hell if she wanted to. It was odd that a maid had so much sway over her brother, but then, Jane had also known that even though her was only a year older than her, he had felt uncomfortable in the parent position. So Trudy had become a sort of sarrogate mother for Jane. But these day, if Jane batted her lashes wrong, she was confined her room or lectured by her brother thanks to Trudy. Trudy simply didn't realize how hard it was for Jane. Twenty-one with no mother to guide her or give her tidbits on nobility. Trudy could provide care, but she knew just about the minimum basics on how ladies and nobility acted and socialized. So Jane had been given tutor after tuttor, spent hour after hour cramped in a stuffy Parlor learning how NOT to be Jane, but instead to be the Lady Jane Leanna Kingsley. After a few years, she had absolutely loathed the indoors. Now she could constantly be found climbing out of her window and chafing at the restraints that society put on a girl in her position. Grow up Jane! Trudy has her hands full with the house! She can't guard you along with it! Show some respect for her! Trudy. Trudy. Trudy. Shaking her head quickly, Jane forced her thoughts to the present.
"Stop acting as if the Lady is a child! Your smothering her."
xx Jane blinked and looked back at her newfound companion. Those had been her exact thoughts. She was being smothered. She'd just as well live her life as a heathen, running the countryside, if that was her only other option to the current living situation. Matilda. She needed Matilda here. No one stood up for Jane but Matilda. Maltida who saw her need for freedom and nodded in acceptance. But then, this Lord didn't seem to think that Jane was being so horrible. Could there be a chance at coming out of this unscathed? Shifting, she angled herself to face him as he spoke on, hanging on his adamant, 'don't talk back' tone. But he was absolutely maginificant! She could have picked anyone to defend her better. He'd been riled, she noted, his eyes seeming to glisten with some raw power as he chastised Trudy. Oh, she had to repeat that again for the joy it brought her. He chastised Trudy. Her face split into a wide grin, eyes sparkling in triumph as his words came to a smooth stop. She chanced a glance at Trudy who looked shocked and simply taken aback. Oh dear. Would the almighty Lord Kingsley here about this, or simply her brother? Because there was a difference between the two. One was the bad mood side, the other the good mood side of him.
xx Watching Trudy's gaze shift to her, the grin disappeared and she lowered her eyes to the ground. There was no way Trudy was going to see the pure adoration gleaming in her emerald eyes. Sucking in a breath, she shoved her shoulders back and waited, on bated breath, for Trudy's instinctive rebuttle.
"Well Lord Grace, if ye think ye can handle her then I wash my hands of her for the night!" Her eyes bore into Jane's as she spoke on. "But mark my words Miss Jane! Ye have no life ahead of ye on the path yer trodding! No doubt the nobles will know that ye've been cahooting in the alleys with unknown men. It won't just be yer reputation soiled this time. People will think...well, what they should think. That yer not as innocent as yeh seem ta be!"
Oh dear Gods. What would people think? Did she care? Of course she did. Why? Because Lord Shaden had simply come to her rescue. He'd done nothing wrong. Leveling a glare at Trudy, shetook another deep breath and spooke calmly, if not with an acidic tone. "Trudy, dear, are you suggesting that Lord Shaden, whom you do not know but is surely of noble birth, is a less than honorable man? If so, I should like to know what made you think so. And furthermore, should you and my brother think to control my life any more than you already do, you are sorely mistaken! If I choose to return home tonight, it will not be done with consequences. I will not be locked in my room and you WILL NOT bring the horrid tutor back to shove that 'you are not Jane, you are a title!' crap down my throat again." She didn't care what Trudy's words had also been saying about herself being wanton, or whatever the nobles called it these day. Gasping at her own words, she shot a glare at Lord Shaden, as if accusing him of being the reason she'd said that. But then, his temper had roiled her own. She did a love men who weren't afraid to say just what was on their minds. And he seemed to be that kind. No hitting around the bush and hding all emotions and anger from view persona, like all of the other nobles. Offering him an apologetic smile, she spoke. "I'm sorry Lord Shaden. I-I shouldn't have made such a scene...I should think before I speak, I suppose." She'd said the word 'crap' in front of him. Not a word Ladies were supposed to use. Men used the word when they felt like it, but a lady would have her mouth washed with soap for saying it. Flinching, she waited for the rebuke, as she watched Trudy turn and march off. She normally got strong words from the men about how unfeminine she was when she had an outburst, and this wouldn't be any different. Sughing, she couldn't help but think that the day had been horrible but the evening was aiming to be down right hellish.

Oh know, whatever would he do, his reputation could be ruined. He didn't know how he would go on. He rolled his eyes. He thought the matter done with and was about to turn to Lady Jane, and then she was speaking. He was surprised, again, not something that happens this often, at her words. She was defending him, and standing up for herself. He smiled encouragingly. Willing her to keep going, finally put this Trudy women back in her place, which she seemed to have forgotten a long time ago. He met her glare, and understood what it was for. His irritation at rolled off him and onto her, but wasn't that a good thing? Only a few seconds later he received an apologetic smile.
Shaden uncrossed his arms, placing them at his sides. "Please Lady Jane, there is no need for an apology." He said after she was finished, she looked like she was ready for a scolding, and he smiled, "I thought you were brilliant! You most speak to her like that more often. I do believe it would be good for her." The honesty in his voice was clear and easy to catch. He'd found the whole thing very enjoyable. It wasn't everyday he heard a Lady say 'crap' he'd very nearly laughed right at that point and had only just held his lips shut.
Now that Trudy was gone, he hoped he'd never ave to set eyes on that horrid women again, he truly was left with the responsibility for Lady Jane. If nothing else, Shaden was a man of his word, and he'd said he would get her home. When, however, was another matter entirely. She had very pretty eyes, Shaden noted to himself, and that red hair was simply beautiful. "Well," He began, "Now that your free from your captor for now, where is it you would like to go?" Shaden asked lightly, in high spirits now. He would be glad of the company, even if it was just for a short while.

Offering him a smile, she nodded. "It did feel good to tell her just what was on my mind. Thank you." She grinned without subtlety, and laughed slightly. "If you hadn't spoken your mind, I don't think I could have spoken my own. She holds great sway with my brother. Even thought I was already a teenager when my parents died, she still took the mothering role and I think he feels like I couldn't have been raised without her." Shrugging slightly, she looked at the dead end and laughed. "I really have no clue why I came this way to get away from her...A lack of judgement I suppose...Not that I ever consider things when I'm, er, on the run." She chuckled.
Listening to him, she was pleasently surprised. He was asking her where she wanted to go? No one had ever done that before. She was simply told and bade not to cause trouble. Grinning mischieviously, she offered in a conspiratorial tone, "Oh! I do think I have one place I'd like to visit...But it's hardly proper...My brother speaks of it often and he's constantly saying 'Jane, that is one part of town you are NOT allowed to go!' So, naturally, I always want to go. What did he it...?" She studied the ground for a minute before raising her eyes. "Oh yes! The Slums! I'm not saying that I would enjoy looking at the homes of those with a worst luck in the money area than I, but well, it's some place I'm not supposed to go."
Shifting, she tilted her head to peer up at her. "Yes, I do believe you would be a nice character in a dime novel..." Blinking, she blushed. "Erm..Well, I guess by now you've heard rumor that I am one of those ladies who read those scandalous books, so I shalln't feel bad for telling you that. I'm not at all decent company, so if you'd rather not have your reputation soiled by being seen with me, I'll quite understand." Nodding, she didn't seem hurt by the thought of people avoiding her, she was used to it. She didn't know how she was supposed to feel when she heard insults and the ladies at tea sneered at her 'inapropriated behavior. Sighing she spoke, "I suppose the red hair doesn't help either. It's said to be the Kingsley curse. I always wondered why...I'm the only person in my family with red hair..." She spoke naively.
"Oh! I'm babbling! I'm sorry! But I really would like to go somewhere I'm not supposed to go. I think you can protect me just fine. And your quite handsome, if you don't mind me saying. So I won't be at all embarrassed at having you as my company. All around, your the perfect escort in my opinion. Well, the perfect escort for me, atleast. After tonight though, when Trudy surely babbles about catching us in the alley, I'm sure you'll regret being my escort..." What in the world was wrong with her? Why was she babbling so much? Pouting at her own constant chatter, she tipped her chin up and offered her hand like a lady was supposed to, in preparation for being 'escorted' from the alley. Perhaps she felt so comfortable in his company that she wasn't worried about how inapropriate she was acting. He hadn't acted horrified at her the whole time though. Perhaps he wasn't the time to dislike her because of her adventurous attitude. One could only hope.

She grinned mischievously, and Shaden knew it any idea she told him now would be a place where she wasn't allowed to go, not that he cared. It was healthy to disobey sometimes, to do what you weren't told to do. So when she finally answered 'The Slums' he mealy nodded his head, it wasn't the best place, but he doubted whether they would run into any kind of trouble there. Shaden had only been there once or twice, though he couldn't recall why he had gone, most likely just to go, for something to do and see the same old things everyday.
Her quick blushing made her even more beautiful then she already was, he had no care that she read those novels. People were far to strict around here. Or maybe he was just to easy going. He frowned though slightly, and shook his head, "I have very little worries about my reputation, let those high-strung nobles think what they will. I don't care. I'll simply be glad of your company for now." His smiled was sweet and charming, though he had not intended it to be such.
"I like your red hair, I see nothing wrong with it." Again, he smiled, this time exposing white straight teeth. She was so cute when she was babbling on like that, going on and on about little meaningless things, but still he seemed to hang onto every word spoken.
"And your quite handsome, if you don't mind me saying. So I won't be at all embarrassed at having you as my company."
But those quick words caught Shaden off guard, and the lightest of blush came to his cheeks. It wasn't normal for such a thing to come up like this, at least now by any of the other Ladies, but of course, Lady Jane was not of the norm and so he should have been prepared for something like this, but he hadn't been. She never failed to amaze him. "I will never have a single regret in being your escort." The words sounded like a secret promise, both to himself and to her. An mused smiled flashed over his face as her chin tilted up and her hand offered out, ready to be escorted. He took her hand, the first real connect made between them, her skin was soft, softer then he'd thought it would be for all her adventures and such. He started leading her out of the alley, not wanting to stand there any longer then needed, for the most part he continued to look forward, his eyes traveling back and forth, but they also glanced over her every few seconds. "To The Slums then?" He questioned, or rather checked as he led them in the right direction.
